Magic Chess Go Go Commander Tier List

40 commanders · tiers updated 27 Sep 2026

You pick a Commander before the match. Each grants a unique Power Card in round I-2, gains 2 EXP a round, and levels up through the game for more board slots and better shop odds for rare heroes.

How commanders are ranked here

A commander decides where a match's resources come from. Some make gold (Chou, Kalea, Nana), some hand out heroes (Guinevere, Vale, Brody), and some make the board itself stronger (Minotaur's enhanced items, Ruby's weapons, Angela's buffed caster). The ranking below places every commander in Season 7.1 by how much that resource is worth across a whole match, how early it arrives and how reliably it pays, and each card says why it sits where it does. Lukas, due later in Season 7, is listed after the ranked groups.

S

The picks to beat this patch: each changes the whole match, not just one stage of it.

A

Strong in most lobbies, with one clear condition or weakness.

B

Good at one job, but slower to pay off or tied to a narrower plan.

AamonAamonA Mirror Device from Round 1 is a free copy before anyone has rolled, but the second needs seven 2-stars, so his value fades while Brody keeps making 5-Gold heroes all match.AliceAliceEighth this patch: a dedicated 3-cost re-roll tool, but her picks lock in during Stages I to III, where Guinevere's free Heroes suit any plan.DiggieDiggieWith his card the Chest opens about every four rounds and ends on a 25-Gold payout, but the first opening waits until Stage II, by which point Nana and Chou have already paid.DyrrothDyrrothA 1-star traded up one Gold cost every three rounds works like a slower Brody, and the random hero he hands back is often not one your board uses.FannyFannyAn extra unit is strong in any lineup, but unstarred the Launcher takes ten rounds to build, so her whole payoff rests on finding the star-up early; Minotaur strengthens the units you already field from the mid game with no build time.FrancoFrancoTenth this patch: Loot gold from every fight, but the hook picks its victim at random, so his income swings more than Chou's fixed win pay.FreyaFreyaShe fits every board and can follow a pivot mid-match, but the game never states how much the charge adds, while Angela's +35% Skill DMG is a number you can plan a board around.GuinevereGuinevereSeventh this patch: her free Heroes add up over a long match, but she gives nothing in Stage I, where Chou's win gold and Nana's safety net already pay.GusionGusionIn Classic a free Role Synergy plus 7 Gold is a Magic Crystal you didn't have to buy: useful on any board, but smaller than Lunox's Blessing with its three extra heroes. Magic Auction is where his kit matters most.HarleyHarleyA free 5-Gold hero in Stage II is the jump Brody is ranked for, but Harley gives it once and Brody keeps giving it every four rounds.KaguraKaguraHer shield and card both go on your carry from Stage I, but they save one hero once a fight, where Nana's survival protects the whole match.KarinaKarinaRanked on her early pressure: Kishin players ban her along with Alice and Angela because the Twinblades win Stage I fights, but the blades only reach enemies beside a melee carrier.LingLingHis card's three copies of one 4-Gold hero make a free 2-star by level 7, but you can't choose it, where Paquito's Gloves copy a hero you picked; the Dueling Ring also does little against Stargazer boards.LunoxLunoxOne extra Synergy count from Stage I is early board power, and the star-up's three heroes back it up, but the Blessing is random and can land on a Synergy you weren't building, where Freya lets you choose the Synergy and move it later.Luo YiLuo YiSix copies of one 3-Gold hero from the card is a 2-star with spares, but the hero is random, and the Essence Core only pays off on a board built around one item carrier; Paquito's Gloves copy a hero you actually chose.LyliaLyliaThe Witch Shop is a second Shop for finishing 3-stars, but it only opens at Capacity 8, so Lylia gives nothing in the rounds where Chou and Nana are already paying.MiyaMiyaHer card's 12 Gold on turn one is one of the larger opening payouts, but the arrows fire only every sixth basic attack, so they need a fast carry; on a caster board Angela's +35% Skill DMG does far more.MoskovMoskovA rich kit, with five free heroes from the card and 20 Gold of ritual pay, but the heroes are random and often sit on the bench, while Brody's match your board by cost or Synergy.PaquitoPaquitoTwo copies of a 4-Gold carry in Stage III is most of a 2-star, but the Gloves arrive on fixed rounds, so Paquito helps you finish a board rather than find one, and Brody's Domain keeps producing 5-Gold heroes long after the last Glove.Popol and KupaPopol and KupaA hero a round plus Gold adds up over a match, but the copies come from the enemy's board rather than yours, so many of them end up sold.ValeValeNinth this patch: every reward hangs on levelling, which suits a rush, while Nana, Kalea and Chou pay whether or not you level.ValirValirAn extra Go Go Card is a real resource, but he gets it once, in Stage II, while Yu Zhong's card keeps improving every card after it.VexanaVexanaAn extra reward in the first three Go Go Box rounds, four with her card, adds up, but it comes from what the other players left behind, while Yu Zhong's card improves every Go Go Card you take.WanwanWanwanTwenty strikes of up to 550 can settle a close fight on any board, but they come once a battle and aim at the weakest enemy, not the carry that Ruby's Scythe hunts down.Yu ZhongYu ZhongBetter cards help any board, but in Classic the upgrade only touches the Go Go Card rounds. His Magic Auction skill, which pays for finishing in every place once, is the stronger half.
C

Playable, but outclassed in Classic by commanders that do the same job sooner.

Not ranked this patch. Each page still carries the commander's full skill, star-up and Power Card.

The top picks

Minotaur leads because his advantage arrives in the mid game, when most commanders are still waiting on copies: five enhanced items between skill and card let 2-star heroes beat 3-star boards. Nana is second for the opposite reason. She changes nothing on the board, but surviving two lethal hits lets you bank for longer than anyone else, and her star-up pays gold for the damage you take while doing it.

Brody arrived after the patch and went straight into the top group. He is the only commander who turns spare heroes into 5-cost ones, the rarest units in the pool, which makes him the strongest commander for a late-game legend board.

What changed in Season 7.1

The patch on 9 September buffed Minotaur, now first in the ranking, reworked Lylia, and brought back the Magic Auction mode with a separate skill for 18 commanders. Brody followed on 24 September. Most commanders land in B. Their kits pay, but later, less or less reliably than the eight above them: a free 5-Gold hero once instead of on a loop, or a copy you can't choose. The six in C each ask for something in return, like skipping purchases or giving up Interest.

Bans follow the Synergies in the lobby. Kishin players tend to ban Alice, Angela or Karina, the commanders that win the early rounds before Kishin's gear has been upgraded.
